Addiction Counseling Master’s Degree Programs

Addiction counseling is a part of the psychology field that primarily concerns the prevention of addiction, counseling of individuals and families with addiction problems, and the performing of intervention and therapeutic services for people who suffer from addiction. By applying this knowledge, addiction counselors can help patients discover the root of their problems to treat addictions, from alcohol and drugs to non-substance addictions, such as gambling. It is related to the subjects of counseling, psychology, sociology, pharmacology, ethics, and others.

You can pursue either a Master of Science (MS) or Master of Arts (MA) degree in addiction counseling. Regardless, masters programs generally take two years to complete. In addition, most programs require students to complete hours of supervised clinical practice for counseling, observing, and other relevant activities. Coursework may cover such areas as psychology of addiction, sociology, crisis intervention, substance abuse identification methodologies, substance abuse treatment modalities, substance abuse prevention and treatment, group dynamics, and law, among other topics. Some masters programs require a bachelor’s degree in a related field such as counseling or psychology in order to apply. Upon graduation, you can seek employment in addiction treatment centers, correctional settings, school settings, hospitals, clinics, and government agencies.
