Alcohol & Drug Counseling Master’s Degree Programs

The field of alcohol and drug counseling focuses on people who suffer from drug, alcohol, and other substance addictions. Counselors work closely with patients to identify reasons for their behavior, and help them change and remedy it. This field is closely related to subjects such as substance abuse, clinical counseling, mental health, and substance abuse counseling.

A master’s degree in alcohol & drug counseling is generally the minimum educational requirement for licensure. Both Master of Science (MS) and Master of Arts (MA) degrees are offered and generally take two years to complete. One does not necessarily need an undergraduate degree in psychology to apply for such programs, but many institutions require students to have already completed courses in related subjects, such as abnormal psychology, psychology, and behavioral statistics, before attending. Some may also require GRE scores in order to apply. Coursework can include such classes as group counseling techniques; treatment methods for drug and alcohol abuse; individual counseling, assessment, and diagnosis; the role of family in rehabilitation; and contemporary issues in substance abuse. Upon graduation, you can seek employment in drug detoxification centers, inpatient drug rehabilitation programs within hospitals and clinics, halfway houses, correctional institutions, employee assistance programs, and other community settings.
