Clinical Counseling Master’s Degree Programs

Clinical counseling is a field that can involve elements of both clinical psychology and counseling psychology. Practitioners of this discipline can integrate the science of mental health research with practice; they can diagnose and treat mental disorders, learning disabilities, and cognitive, behavioral, and emotional problems through the use of individual, child, family, and group therapies.

Pursuing a Master of Science (MS) degree in clinical counseling often involves integrated academic, scientific, and professional training. Typically, an MS takes two years to complete. Many programs require an undergraduate degree in psychology or a related field in order to apply. Coursework can include the study of the theoretical framework of psychology and clinical counseling. Some institutions offer students the opportunity to choose an area of specialization, such as psychopharmacology, substance abuse, sexual issues, or death and dying. In addition to taking classes, most programs also require students to complete clinical hours in a job setting with real patients. Graduates can pursue a variety of careers in the mental health field, including counselors, program directors, researchers, grant writers, and policy makers on the local, state, and national levels. Some holders of this degree continue their education at the PhD level.
