Forensic Counseling Master’s Degree Programs

The forensic counseling field involves the counseling and treatment of individuals in the criminal justice system. Forensic counselors work directly with criminals to assess potential mental illnesses and learning disabilities, develop plans for treatment, and connect individuals with community resources. It is closely related to the fields of psychiatry, criminal justice, social work, addiction counseling, and mental health counseling, among others.

A master’s degree in forensic counseling examines the relationship between psychology and the legal system, and trains students to apply psychological principles to legal issues in judicial, correctional, clinical, administrative, and education systems. This degree generally takes two years to complete. Some programs require applicants to already have an undergraduate degree in a related subject, such as social science, psychology, social work, addictions, nursing, criminal justice, or some other relevant human science. Coursework may include subjects such as mental health law, conflict management and negotiation, and marriage and family counseling. Most programs may also require on-the-site training. Upon completion of this degree, you will be able to seek career opportunities in such settings as court clinics, secured forensic units, correctional facilities, child advocacy centers, forensic assessment, treatment facilities, and general counseling settings.
