Marriage & Family Therapy Master’s Degree Programs
Marriage and family therapy is a field that applies family systems theories and therapeutic techniques to address a wide range of relationship issues and to assess and treat mental and emotional disorders and problems within the family system. This discipline focuses on providing counseling to families, individuals, and couples to help them resolve emotional, behavioral, and relational conflicts. It is closely related to the subjects of family studies, child development, addiction processes, personality theory, gender roles and human sexuality.
A master’s degree in marriage and family therapy provides students with a strong understanding of counseling principles and strategies with which to seek licensure as Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs). Master’s programs in this field typically take two to three years to complete. While many programs do not have prerequisites, some prefer applicants who have bachelor’s degrees in human service fields such as counseling or social work. Coursework often includes such subjects as adolescent psychology, counseling theories, group therapy, human growth and development, human sexuality, marriage and family systems, principles and techniques of counseling, substance abuse, and theories of psychotherapy. Upon graduation, you can pursue job opportunities in a variety of settings, including hospital programs, mental health agencies, ministries, counseling centers, public or private facilities, and private practices.
