Professional Counseling Master’s Degree Programs

Professional counseling is a field that combines the latest research with both theory and clinical techniques to help patients from all walks of life via talk therapy and problem analysis. It is closely related to the fields of psychology, human behavior, and social sciences.

A master’s degree in professional counseling provides students with an understanding of individual and group counseling; ethical, professional, and legal issues in counseling; social and cultural factors in counseling; human development; and the application of research methodology and statistics to understand health issues. Master’s degrees generally take two years to complete, and will teach students how to diagnose and treat clients as well as understand how humans operate mentally. Master’s programs require applicants to have a bachelor’s degree, and many also require the submission of Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) scores. Coursework can include such subjects as human development, group dynamics, professional identity and ethics as a professional counselor, advanced counseling techniques, individual appraisal, methods of research, diagnosis and treatment, and applied practice for professional counseling.
