School Counseling Master’s Degree Programs

School counseling is a field that focuses on meeting the growing needs of K-12 students through finding effective interventions to support sound psychological and behavioral development. It is closely related to a number of disciplines, including academic assistance, social assistance and career guidance.

A master’s degree in school counseling will prepare you to develop, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive counseling and guidance program for children in public or private schools. This degree generally takes two to two-and-a-half years to complete and include not only classes but also field training and residencies. In addition to requiring a bachelor’s degree, some programs also require you to submit scores from the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). Course work, which many programs design according to principles established by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), can include such subjects as counseling techniques, counseling theories, group counseling, developmental psychology, school counseling basics, curriculum organization, and administration of counseling programs, among others. Upon graduation, you can seek employment as a school counselor for elementary, middle, or high schools. Many programs also fulfill state requirements for certification or licensure as a school counselor.
